2nd, 3rd, & 4th Gen Thunderbird: More Popular than the 1st Gen?
The second generation Thunderbird is controversial to say the least. Many in the car community have distaste for the styling of the bigger Thunderbirds. However the 1958 Thunderbird earns the Motor Trend Car of the year award for 1958 and Ford sell four times as many second generation T-birds as they had the 3 years prior. Today we are going to take a look at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Ford Thunderbird.

The Ford Festiva the history and why it’s not really a Ford

The Ford Festiva is a Ford product that isn’t actually a Ford. Many believe this car was the successor to the early Fiesta. Tempo sure did deliver on value for the dollar. My mom had an 89 and i owned four of them over the years. The automatic transmission one’s ate tie rod ends and muffler systems at an above average rate. But neither of those parts were actually expensive. The air conditioning was super powerful and the fuel injected ones gave adequate performance. Overall I cannot say that I had any serious issues with any of them. I did my own maintenance and oil changes, they were easy to service and the diesel version was phenomenal on fuel if you were willing to live with the slow acceleration in city driving. On the freeway the diesel was great. Many people hated them, but I think they were very good and enjoyed my experience with them.

Chevy tried that with the Volt. I'm not sure it was the best execution of the idea so it's still could work however the access to a charging system is still a pinch point for too many Americans. It's been roughly year and half since I made this video and current market conditions lead me to believe what I was saying then is panning out now. EV demand is down considerably even with all the government incentives in place. Demand for hybrid vehicles is at an all time high. Toyota Hybrids are selling long before they make it to the dealer and Teslas are stacked up in holding lots with no one looking to purchase them.

IMO, what killed the original Bird was the Mustang on the low end and the Galaxy 500 on the high end during the '60s. The Bird should have gone back to a 2 seater or canceled after '71..

If I had to pick a favorite between those 3 in styling, I'd pick the second gen. It's much more elegant, royal, and classy than the third and fourth gens, which have a more economical, elderly exterior, other than the 1962 Sports Roadster. The fifth gen I like much more than the second, third, and fourth. It had the perfect styling to make it a cross between personal luxury and muscular and attract a wide variety of buyers.

Thanks so much for this comprehensive retrospective on the Falcon. My very first car was a 1963 Falcon Wagon. A 4-door (or more precisely, a 5 -door) model, that carried the 170 cu. in. inline 6 cyl, automatic transmission, and featured a power rear window in the tailgate! I drove this for a couple years and, in hindsight, didn't give this car the 'love' it deserved. It was good on gas, and didn't have too many issues, despite my lack of maintenance applied to it. Would love to have that car today...

Shelby did not call it a Super Snake, that was a name first used by the author of an article in the August 1967 edition of Drag Strip magazine. Also, Shelby American in fact built three 1967 GT500s with 427 side oilers, so besides No 544 as featured here, there are also Nos. 289 and 1947 (which was known by Shelby American as the “factory drag unit” … I’ve seen the original paperwork). All this can be verified by consulting the Shelby American Automobile Club’s registry for 1967 Shelby Mustangs. The factory drag unit is also featured in an online Motor Trend article which can be easily found.

A dark blue 1985 first gen was the first new car I ever bought, for my now ex-wife. I liked the looks 1000x times better than the 2nd gen. We liked it, drove it all over. It had adequate power, rode well, and since we were over ten years away from having kids, it had great space for our luggage and our beagle. We drove it all over the US. We had the five speed, and one of the things I really liked was it had an on/off button in the top of the gearshift for the AC, so you could click it off while accelerating, and quick it back on once you were up to speed without having to reach for the dash controls. I think the only issue we ever had with it was a bad / too low temp thermostat (which I replaced myself). Drove it for about ten years and traded it in on a beautiful red 1995 Probe, which we had for about 18 years until someone pulled out in front of my daughter and totaled it - she wasn't hurt.

And I’m not really a classic car guy but Ford knocked it out of the park, over the wall and onto the roof of the house a block away from the ballpark with that car.
